A family company, an arborist’s standard.

Great Western Tree Care began doing business on January 1st, 2018. Founder and president Chad Szpunar moved to Castle Rock in 2014 after selling Chad’s Tree & Shrub Service, the company he started in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2006. In Colorado he went to work for a large Denver company and then as a contract climber for several local outfits.

Colorado opened a whole new world of tree care. Chad found himself surrounded by some of the best climbers and arborists in the Rocky Mountain region, and with the help of mentors and friends in the Colorado tree community he came to believe he could build something here that was genuinely great.

Year one was a challenge. Chad and one employee, Morgan Burnett — who today remains his lead guy — ran most of that year out of a truck and a trailer. By the end of it the company had bought a chip truck and chipper and brought on a few more employees. That same year Stephanie left her job at the bank to join the effort full time. Today she is the heart and soul of the company.

Growth since then has come from the people: wonderful employees, managers we’ve built long relationships with, and customers who put their faith in us. Today Great Western is a driving force that has earned the respect of its competitors for providing proper tree care in Douglas County and the surrounding communities.

And we have a lot of fun. Our core values have created a culture that makes this a beautiful place to work and build a career in an industry that is complex, challenging, ever changing, and above all important to the community.
